Saw this in the Gizmodo comments section, but I think it applies just as much to us and our car choices.

Manual vs Auto - inconvenience wins!

Number of doors - 2 doors best for inconvenience and cost

Big engines - more expensive to buy and uses more gas

“Quirky” cars - inconvenience is cool!

Vintage cars - enough said

As driver of a 2-door manual German car with a big engine and no spare tire, I identify with this.

As the owner of four cars, only two of which run, and the running cars having a top speed of 70 and having ~400k miles on the road respectfully, I reject the expense part... but the “inconvenience”, boy howdy.

Not entirely:

Manual is less expensive compared to when your CVT or complex automatic bites the dust

2-doors are VERY convenient in college because it means you won’t be the taxi bitch for when everyone is drunk and vomiting

...Okay, you’re right on big engines but I don’t want to be saddled with fixing forced induction cars when they break

I’ll stick with cars from the previous 3 decades. Sure, they’re not great but parts are plentiful, they’re not too complex to self-service and maintain, and you can always put in a little more money to upgrade them to be more efficient.

Plus, now that guy gets to talk incessantly about his vinyl.

I made the mistake of buying my first convenient car and I regret it every moment. What’s great is it is the opposite of everything on your list above.

That is just sex. Do you not remember the rules around these parts?

Manual is usually cheaper to buy and maintain. Less doors equals more rigidity because racecar. Big engines equals less stress on the drive train over boosted cars equals cheaper to maintain. I will agree with the quirky bit.

Must tag if it's NSFW. But I like your rule better.

Does it have leatherette? Congrats, then you can brag about vinyl too!

No spare tyre? What do you drive?

I drive an MR2 - small, mid-engined, with very constrained storage throughout the car. But they managed to fit in a spare tyre.

135i. Lots of trunk space for the size! Plenty of room for a spare...

I guess they decided it was easier to sell a car based on storage volume than presence of a spare. So it comes with that tyre goop stuff or something?

Nope, just run-flats.

I see. But tyres are very much a consumable. What happens when it comes time to replace them? You’re forced to buy run-flat tyres, or suffer the wrath of having no backup plan whatsoever?

Store-bought goop I guess.

Yup, already replaced them with non-run-flats and bought some goop. Like the comic says, inconvenience and expense!

I’ll admit I wish it had a spare.

I wouldn’t beat yourself up too much about it.

My cars have all had space-saver spares. Some people hate them like you wouldn’t believe. But I’ve never had a flat tyre, so the space I’ve saved with those tyres over the years has come with zero downside so far.

What I’m saying is, your wishing you had a spare should depend on how many flats you’ve had. If you never get a flat and you enjoy the trunk space regularly, that’s a win-win!
